Made By Me #8

I'm not sure what it is about this dress but I don't really like it :(  I squealed when I saw the fabric, absolutely loved it, but now it's a dress there is something 'meh' about it. Not sure if it's the colours on me, I just can't put my finger on what I don't like about it.  Gutting when you have spent the time making something only for your heart to sink when you try it on for the first time.  I love the pattern and the base colour should work on me but just meh.  Maybe I will like it more when I ditch the black tights, will have to see what it looks like with my white fishnets.  I bought the fabric in John Lewis but haven't been able to find it online in the UK to link to, I have linked to a US fabric store if you want further details on it, might look lovely on you!

Dress: Made by me using Agapanthus in teal

Guess it doesn't always work out how you think it will!

  1. I love your sew sundays! I've been making a shirt dress and I love it, but I've put the skirt on and now I just can't get on with it - so I know your feeling! Your fabric choices are A+, love it!

  4. Try it sans tights and with a solid colored belt to break the dress up a bit!

  5. Owww sorry you don't like this one Sarah! Not sure why, if you loved the fabric it's logical you would have loved the dress, but I guess it's not an exact science. Don't let it put you off! :) <3 Claire @ Jazzpad

  6. Lovely fabric, but a bit overwhelming from a distance, I reckon short sleeves and cardi to break it up! Just seen you're on 18 - sewing like a trooper! I find it super hard to guess what fabric looks like made up, always different. Love all your great fabrics

    1. Yeah maybe that's what it is! I am going to shorten the sleeves to elbow length when I can be bothered and try it without black tights and see how I feel about it then. It is so hard to tell what a fabric will be like as a dress, sometimes it is really hard to even tell what a fabric is like from the tiny photo on most online stores. I usually google the fabric to see if I can find a photo of it on the bolt so I can work out scale etc.

  7. Well I have to admit, until very recently I've ended up hating (and therefore not wearing) almost all of the dresses I've made. So annoying when you've put weeks of work into them.
I think this is lovely - what about trying with a pair of white tights? I love the mix of summery colours.

    1. Oh Char that makes me sad! Poor unloved dresses!! Glad you love the ones you've been making this time around. I am going to try it with white/nude tights and am going to shorten the sleeves - fingers crossed I love it then as you know I was excited to find the fabric!

  8. I think it's the tights! It's such a lovely spring/summer dress that the black winter tights throw it off kilter. I hope you can fall back in love with it.

    1. Thanks lovely! I am going to try it with white/nude tights and also shorten the sleeves to elbow length. Hope that does the trick as I love the fabric.

  9. maybe it just needs a belt to synch it in a little more, I see what you mean though.. the fabric is beautiful but there is just something.. x

  10. I've just bought this dress pattern after hearing about so many people's experiences. I agree with above, it's such a lovely summer pattern...it's made for sandals and a summer hat. It's a beautiful pattern! Looking forward to how you get on with it x

    1. The Emery is amazing, I have made 18 of them so far! It is exactly the dress I would have designed if someone had asked me to describe my dream dress. It's the fabric I am not liking, hopefully that will change when I ditch the tights and shorten the sleeves. Let me know how you get on with your Emery :)

  11. The colours and print look lovely. I agree with Rox that a belt might change the look enough for you to love it.
If you don't usually wear belts, take a piece of solid-coloured coordinating fabric a couple of centimetres longer than your waist measurement, sew it into a tube, turn right side out, fold under the ends and sew around the waist so it looks like a belt but you don't have to futz with fitting it all the time. Job done!

    1. Hi Tania, I haven't taken the sleeves up yet so if I still don't like it when I finally try it again I will look at sewing on a contrasting waistband. I never wear belts and take waist ties off things but a sewn on waistband is a great alternative, thank you :)

  12. I think it looks great, but I know the feeling. In fact, I have the same problem going on right now with a fabric I love! I may cut mine in half and make a skirt and/or crop top. Might like one half or the other!
