Wednesday Wants

Another themed wishlist for you this week, no surprise that it is halloween themed!  These beauties are all timeless and you'll be rocking them long after the facepaint has washed off.

I have a bit of an obsession with Sugarhill Boutique right now.  Both of these dresses are no longer on my wishlist as I have already bought them, haha! They are perfect for this season and I can now add bats and wolves to my #wardrobezoo.

 Bat Dress: Sugarhill Boutique

 Wolf Dress: Sugarhill Boutique

I love this little ghost jumper and have seen loads of you trying this on in instagram photos! It is just so damn cute.  Definitely more cute than scary.

Ghost Jumper: JW Anderson for Topshop

I can see Law falling in love with both the skull print scarf and the River Island skeleton bracelet, I always think of Law when ever I see skulls.  She has an amazing bone necklace that I will steal from her one day!
Skull Scarf: asos

Skeleton Bracelet: River Island

It wouldn't be a wishlist without a spooky pair of shoes now would it?! I love the neons against the black and would totally rock these babies all year round.  Just fabulous!

Court Shoes: Iron Fist @ Spartoo

My Life Through A Lense

You may not realise but I have been cursed with poor vision.  It started when I was in my early twenties and I noticed that I couldn't quite read that poster and couldn't quite make out that silhouette in the distance.  I had my eyes tested and found I needed glasses, I was pretty excited about this as stupidly I always wanted glasses as a kid.  I wore glasses for a good few years until I realised I had become 'the girl with the glasses'.  They were pretty distinctive glasses I suppose, it was around 1999 and way before geek glasses and plastic frames became cool, but even so I didn't like the label.

So I went and got myself some contact lenses.  Even though I was pretty squeamish over sticking my fingers in my eyes I loved them from the first moment I managed to put them in my eyes.  I started off with monthly disposables but after a few too many nights on the town getting home late and being too drunk lazy to clean them correctly I started to get a bit worried about eye health and switched to daily disposables.  No solutions, no cleaning, no chance of infecting my eyes.  They seemed to be the perfect solution.

I then had an unfortunate bought of iritis (in both eyes at the same time, ouch!) caused by overwearing my lenses.  Not good!  I was wearing my lenses on average for 18 hours a day,  from the moment I woke up to being the last thing I did before I went to sleep.  I was forced back into wearing glasses for a minimum of three months whilst my poor eyes recovered.  At this time I considered laser eye surgery but am a big wuss so talked myself out of it.  Never google laser eye surgery if you are actually considering it and if you do don't read the horror stories that are most likely made up, out of date or just exaggerated.  It can really put a girl off!  I have since met several people who have had it and found it life changing in the best possible way.  The cost of laser eye surgery also put me off but it has come down so much in recent years and now my prescription has settled down I am seriously reconsidering it and want to know more from people who have had it.

So I need your help and advice.  If you have had laser surgery please let me know, I want to know about the process from real people.  How did you choose a laser clinic?  Did you opt for Lasek or Lasik eye surgery?  Any other information you think will be useful will be gratefully received.  I dream of the day I wake up, open my eyes and can see clearly again!  And don't suggest those silly contact lenses you can wear non stop for a month... they didn't even last a week in my eyes before they threw a wobbly :(  Not even a cute pair of Ray Ban prescription glasses can tempt me back to glasses!

Christmas Party Dress Shopping

I know it's not quite November yet but that hasn't stopped me from starting the hunt for the elusive perfect Christmas party dress already.  It's something we all go through every year and it never seems to get any easier so this year I am going to be prepared and start my search with plenty of time.  And I also promise that when I find the dress of my dreams I will order it straight away! No faffing around in case something better comes along only for the first dress to sell out and the horrific eBay experience to have to take over.  I don't like living life on the edge!  Haha.  My worse experience of this was when I wanted the Oasis purple prom dress from a 4 or 5 years ago, I kept putting off ordering it as I wanted to try it on in store first.  It didn't arrive in my tiny Oasis so by the time I had gotten round to ordering it online it was no where to be found :( It was much easier to get hold of when I decided it would make perfect bridesmaids dresses thankfully :)

I usually end up buying a couple of dresses, one for my works night out and one for a night out with my girls.  And then there is my sister's birthday on boxing day although seeing as she will be 8 months pregnant this year I am guessing it will be quite a tame event this year!  Still a good excuse to buy a pretty dress though right?!

We are contemplating doing a murder mystery for our works Christmas party this year.  I haven't been to one before and have always thought it sounds like great fun.  We have found one near us at Severn Valley Railway which is even themed as Who Killed Christmas?! Best not tell my little niece that Father Christmas has been murdered ;)  It comes with a five course meal which sounds yummy but means I need a dress that can nicely disguise a food baby and this H! by Henry Holland dress fits the bill perfectly.  I am loving navy this season and this dress is understated enough for my works party but pretty enough to still feel dressed up, win/win!

For my girlie night out I want a bit of glitz and sparkle!  I don't need an excuse to wear sequins but when it is totally expected I just have to crack them out.  Sequins can feel so wrong in Spring/Summer but to me make Autumn/Winter.  I love wearing sequins dressed down for day and often team a sequin skirt with a comfy sweater or a sequined knit with a floaty skater skirt so for a night out it has to be special and this pretty ballerina skirted dress made my heart flutter when I set eyes on it.  So, so pretty!

Whatever my sister decides she wants to do for her Birthday this year I have found a dress for all occasions! It can be dressed up with sparkly heels and a statement necklace or dressed down with a pair of cute boots and would look fab at a restaurant, pub or club!  All bases covered.  I very much doubt she will want to go clubbing this year but stranger things have happened, haha.

Have you started looking for your Christmas party dress yet?  Do you go for one dress fits all occasions or like me splash out on several?  I kinda feel it would be rude not to ;)

Sunday Sweets #4 Red Velvet Dexter Style Halloween Cupcakes

These broken glass and blood cupcakes were originally made by Magnolia Bakery for the TV series Dexter.  The original can be seen here.  I was challenged to giving it a go by a friend at work and thought they would make perfect Halloween cupcakes.  The basis of the cake is just a standard Red Velvet cupcake made using the Hummingbird Bakery recipe.  It's just the final decoration that adds the horror!!  I used the Martha Stewart recipe for the caramel glass.

Ingredients
120g unsalted butter
300g caster sugar
2 eggs
20g cocoa powder
40ml red food colouring (I use gel colours as I cannot get Dr Oetker near me)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
240ml buttermilk
300g plain flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
3 teaspoons white wine vinegar

Cream Cheese Frosting
300g icing sugar, sifted
50g unsalted butter
125g cold cream cheese (must be full fat!)

Glass Caramel
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cup water

Already looks like a blood bath...

Method
  • Line a 12 hole muffin tray with cupcake cases.  Preheat the oven to 170C / Fan 150C / Gas 3
  • Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy and well mixed.  Add the eggs and beat until everything is well incorporated
  • In a separate bowl mix together the cocoa powder, red food colouring and vanilla extract to make a dark thick paste.  I used gel colours so I skipped this step and added these ingredients straight into the butter/sugar/egg mix.  Add to the butter mixture and mix thoroughly until evenly combined and coloured (scrape any unmixed ingredients from the side of the bowl with a rubber spatula.
  • Turn your mixer down to slow speed and pour in half the buttermilk.  Beat well until everything is well mixed then add half the flour.  Beat until everything is well incorporated.  Repeat this process until all the buttermilk and flour has been added.  Turn the mixer to  high speed and beat until you have a smooth, even mixture.
  • Turn the mixture down to low speed and add the salt, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar.  Beat well until mixed then turn up the speed again and beat for a couple more minutes.
  • Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until two thirds full and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes.  Leave the cupcakes to cool slightly in the tray before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely
  • When the cupcakes are cool ice with cream cheese frosting and decorate with sugar glass and sugar blood!

  • Make up a batch of cream cheese frosting - beat together the ingredients and beat until light and fluffy, at least 5 minutes.  Do not overbeat as the icing will become runny.

  • Make up a batch of caramel - bring granulated sugar and water to the boil in a small pan stirring until sugar dissolves.  Reduce heat to a medium-high and cook until the mixture just starts to turn pale gold around the edges.  Remove from heat and immediately pour the caramel onto a rimmed baking sheet.  Working quickly tilt the pan to spread caramel to edges to make a very thin layer.  Let it cool to harden.  Once hardened twist the pan to break and add the shards of caramel to the top of the cake.  Drizzle candy blood where the glass has entered the cupcake.

This candy blood was actually part of my costume from #lookscary and was perfect for creating the blood effect on the top of the cakes.  If you don't have candy blood to hand (ha!) then just mix a bit of strawberry ice cream topping with a bit of red food colour and you will get the same gory results.

Of course this recipe can also be used to create more traditional red velvet cupcakes ;)

Panache Bra Fit Challenge

I have been asked to take part in the Panache Bra Fit Challenge and as breasts are very much on my mind this week, with it being Wear It Pink day tomorrow and of course The Bloggers Breast Cancer Awareness Raffle I thought it would be good to give it a go!  For those of you who don't know what it's about Panache have designed a challenge to help you find your perfect fit.  I have completed the challenge myself and want to share my scores using the scoring bats and numbers provided.

So what do I think of the appearance?  I would give it 8 out of 10.  It's clear and simple to use whilst still being pretty, perfect combination.

Panache Bra Fit Challenge

And how do I rate the ease of use? It is a definite 9 out of 10.  You answer a series of multiple choice questions and all the answers are also illustrated to make it easier to pick your answer.

Once you have selected your answer you get information as to how the bra should fit which is clear and offers great advice for a good fitting bra.  I would give the advise given a big fat 9 out of 10.

How would I rate it over all? That would be an 8 out of 10.  The tool doesn't work out what bra size you should be wearing but tells you what to look for in a badly fitting bra.  Thankfully I do not suffer from any of the bra wearing pitfalls and am wearing the perfect size for me :)
