Mini Bag Challenge with Debenhams

I'm a big fan of the current mini bag trend, I love a good quality mini bag as much as I love a novelty bag and boy do I love a novelty bag!  With this in mind Debenhams have set me a challenge to see if I can go a whole week fitting my life in a mini bag.  That is, fitting it into a mini bag without cheating!  I can often be seen walking along swinging a mini bag and then you'll notice the rather large tote bag I also carry to fit in everything I actually need.  So for the past week I have been stripped of my handy tote bag and am limiting myself to the essentials whilst giving my shoulder and back a much needed break.

I received the most gorgeous grey leather mini tote bag from the Betty Jackson Black range which is part of the Designers at Debenhams collection.  The bag is made from buttery soft leather with a coordinating floral lining.  It has one compartment with a internal zipper pocket and two internal pouches which are perfect for keeping your phone and keys in.  How is it no matter how small your bag is you still have to rummage around trying to find your phone?!

So what are my essentials?  I really have stripped it right back - my wallet, keys, sunglasses and a few bits of top up make up.  I tend to carry the make up around with me just in case but hardly ever actually use it but can't quite bring myself to lose the comfort blanket.  Since I got an iPhone 6 I have been able to ditch the rechargeable phone charger as the battery lasts all day! Woooooo!!  I also have my phone with me always but it's not pictured as I am using it to take the photos.  My week has been a success, I haven't missed lugging my tote bag around and haven't needed any of the things I like to carry in it.  Are you too a fan of the mini bag trend?

Wednesday Wants

I had a hard job picking which Closet dress to put in this weeks wishlist.  I spied this one a few weeks ago and have had my eye on it ever since but then I went into Aspire Style yesterday and saw this beauty and have been having an internal battle over which I prefer ever since.  I think I prefer the fabric of the one in Aspire but the cut of the one from asos!  The asos one looks like something I would make for myself.  Maybe I should just get over my fear of ironing pleats and whip up a dress with a pleated skirt.

 Dress: Closet

I am ever increasingly being drawn to navy.  I think it started with this dress and getting over wearing black and navy together as I mostly wear black tights and shoes.  I love this floaty spotty dress and think it would look awesome dancing the night away on a balmy summer evening.

 Dress: asos

This dress is just way too cute for words.  I personally do not wear lower necklines as I prefer to be covered up but think it is so pretty. It would look just as awesome dressed down with a cropped leather jacket and plimsolls as it would with a pair of heels.

Dress: Jack Wills

I need a bit of help, I really want this bag but do not want to pay £40 for it knowing that the unicorn ones that sold for a similar amount were available on eBay for under £10!!  Anyone seen this style?  I have had a search but come up with nothing so far.  Also if you see this one cheaper let me know!

Made By Me #134

I'm so happy this week!  Apart from aching from the smallest bit of gardening ever (seriously, it's as if I have been doing squats!!) everything is all rather lovely this week.  Today is my last working day for the week then it is all systems go getting ready for Rosie and Tom's wedding.  Eeeeeepp!  Hair cut and colour tonight at the fabulous NashWhite, nails being sorted at Simply Nails tomorrow evening and a full day of baking awaits me tomorrow.  I have made my outfit and am really happy with how it has turned out, can't wait to share it with you all.

Everything really does seem better with a bit of sunshine though it will mean I might be squinting a bit in photos from now til about September!  I try to time it when there is still lots of light but not too much.  Failed a bit this time, can you see how hard I am trying not to squint in the bodice photo?!  Oh dear.  This awesome fabric is helping with my desire for some cactus print.  I still want more but it is the nicest I have seen so far.  I want something on a dark background and the cacti have to be green!  It's another beauty from Cotton and Steel, their fabrics seem to be all I am buying at the moment.  I'm really happy that Elephant In My Handbag have gotten in on the act and started stocking my favourite designers.  Don't forget you can save 10% using the discount code in my sidebar --->

I went to a bodice fitting class on Saturday at Sew Me Something with Heather Jacks (the winner of series 2 of the Great British Sewing Bee) and with the help of Jules, the owner and pattern drafter extraordinaire, we have fixed any issues I had with the bodice and I will share my results with you as soon as that bodice is attached to a skirt!  After using their overlockers I have also decided that I need to replace my Singer overlocker.  The Janome ones are SO much nicer to use and a lot quieter and hopefully more reliable.  My Singer has broken twice in the five months I have owned it and whilst the repairs have all been under warranty and speedy I want a reliable machine that doesn't fail so often.  If you're using a Janome overlocker let me know which one and if you would recommend it :)

Made By Me #130

Happy Friday!  The sun is shining and the working week is coming to an end for me so I have my happy face on.  I am taking a class with Heather Jacks, the winner of the second series of the Great British Sewing Bee, tomorrow at Sew Me Something in Stratford so I am looking forward to a weekend of sewing and cake.  That sounds pretty much perfect to me!  I'm holding off on finishing the dress I am making for next Friday's wedding til after the class, I am so excited to get it finished and share it with you guys, I am really happy with how my outfit is coming together so far.

I made a bit of a booboo when cutting out the bodice on this dress, it wasn't quite lined up fully and as a result the very obvious rows of print started to slope on my left hand side.  I was so annoyed when I realised what I had done but thankfully managed to fix it by adjusting the shoulder seams.  I think I got away with it!  I absolutely adore this print but put off ordering it for a while because I couldn't decide between the navy and teal colourways.  Obviously I ended up with the navy but am still contemplating the teal. Where is my favourite see no evil monkey emoticon when I need him?!  I have been saving my favourite pink shoes for the weekend and not allowing myself to wear them to work.  Now I have broken them in they are so comfy and I want to wear them all the time.  I have managed to find some other shoes that fit my strict criteria, namely this blue and this mint pair.  Still hunting for some yellow shoes but may just have to give up and go for these ones.  Discount code please!

I've bought a few bags recently and thought I would share them with you in my outfit posts, it feels a bit weird holding a bag in my garden whilst posing outside my shed but I guess it is no more weird than not holding a bag!  I bought this mini suitcase bag a few weeks ago from Accessorize, isn't it just adorable!  I love the retro styling though it does make me wish I was filling it up to jet off somewhere glamorous for the weekend.  Have a great weekend whatever you're up to.

Wednesday Wants

For this week's wishlist I am loving the lighter evenings and warmer days and doing a little happy dance at the beautifully summery dresses that have just arrived online.  I went out for lunch today and I did not need a coat!  Everything feels brighter when the days are less gloomy, I love this time of the year.  Boy have I got some corkers to share this week, not one but two awesome offerings from Lazy Oaf.  I missed this fabulous dress off the list, I think it's great but I can see it's a bit Marmite.  What will be to most people's taste is this pom pom-tastic splodgey little number.  I need to get some pom pom trim and attach it to all of my dresses.

 Dress: Lazy Oaf

I already own a cloud print dress but am drawn to the scale of print on this Lazy Oaf dress.  It looks like the perfect dress for kicking back and watching the world (and clouds!) pass by.

 Dress: Lazy Oaf

This might be one of the prettiest dresses ever!  The Bea & Dot range at Modcloth never fails to deliver.  It would look perfect with a pair of cute sandals and this bag for a leisurely stroll along the promenade whilst enjoying an ice cream or two.  Bliss.

Dressmaking with George Home

This is one collaboration I have been busting to share, I popped it up on instagram when I first made the dress but it was just way too windy for actual photos.  Today has been glorious and it was definitely apt to give this dress it's first airing whilst the sun has got it's hat on.  It felt like summer is well and truly on the way wearing watermelons and soaking up a few rays in the garden.  Most of the dresses I make are from quilting cotton but I haven't previously made a dress from an actual duvet cover.  I loved the feature on the Asda blog showing the dresses that had been made from their awesome Christmas duvet cover and decided that I had best keep an eye out as they do the best bedding sets going.  They have some awesome designs and even though I have made a watermelon dress before this duvet cover was calling out to be turned into a dress.  I am so pleased how it has turned out.  I decided to keep the yellow piping as I love the contrast it brings and am now on the hunt for a matching pair of yellow shows.  The ones I am wearing are not a bad match but boy are they uncomfortable.  You never find that out til you get to wear them and by then it is too late to return but hey they are perfect for these photos!  I also purchased the cactus clutch bag from a recent Wednesday Wants post, I couldn't not.  A cute little ditsy cactus print duvet cover would be amazing next please, George!

Dress: Made by me using George Home Watermelon Duvet*
Pattern: Emery by Christine Haynes
Shoes: asos
Bag: Pull & Bear
Not content with just wearing the duvet cover I obviously needed to dress our spare bed with it too.  And doesn't it look a pretty picture!  Fits in with my bright tropical theme I have got going on perfectly.  I also managed to pick up the pineapple lamp that has recently gone on sale as part of George's collaboration with Prince's Trust.  Can you believe it is only £20?!  I kept an eye on it for a week or so and thankfully it came back into stock but you have to act quickly as it is already out of stock again.  I loved the first collaboration with the Prince's Trust, I picked up some place mats, but love this one even more!  I am keeping my eye on this flamingo cushion willing it to come back into stock too.

Wednesday Wants

I'm in the middle of making my dress for the lovely Rosie's wedding so thought I would share what I would go for if I wasn't making my own.  The biggest constraint for me when it comes to dress making is not being able to find the fancy fabrics brands like asos use, if I could get my hands on fabrics like the one used in this first dress I would be over the moon.  I managed to find a vintage fabric for my dress and it is going to be a beauty!  This dress looks like something I would make myself apart from the shorter sleeves, it's so pretty and would look great with my new pink Orlas.

Dress: asos

I couldn't actually wear mint to the wedding without looking like I was trying to pass myself off as a bridesmaid...  hehe maybe I should change my plans and go with mint!  I am absolutely loving the occasion dresses at asos at the moment though I do think I could pull this off wearing it to do the weekly shop.

Dress: asos

I've been really impressed with the recent offerings from ChiChi, no longer too flouncy they are now classy over cheap looking.  No cheap lace and too short hemline here and I absolutely adore the combination of colours in this one, so pretty!

Dress: asos
