Through The New Home Keyhole - Guest Bedroom

Little late this week, apologies!  Totally forgot it was Thursday.  This week I am sharing our new guest bedroom aka Rosie's room ;)  This room was the most annoying and labour intensive to decorate, can you believe I had to do four coats of white to cover the previous creamy colour.  For this room I wanted to go with one of my favourite current fashion trends and go for mostly monotone colours with splashes of red.  I wanted to mix spots, stripes and chevrons and make it as eye catching as possible.  I also have the polka dot hearts duvet set from Tesco that everyone has but feel a bit silly changing a bed that no one has slept in yet.

Before and after:

I originally wanted to get the cute cut out heart furniture from Homebase but it was out of stock til July and I am impatient so we opted for some basic Ikea goodness instead.  The bed was our bed in the flat and is unfortunately a bit big for the room but as it will only be used occasionally it's not worth changing.  Other than that I love how it has turned out, was a bit worried that it might look a mess of patterns.  I think keeping the colour scheme simple has stopped that from happening.

The bedside table, chest of drawers and lampshade are all from Ikea, the duvet cover is from eBay

Char bought me the heart bunting for my birthday, the cushions are all from the flat along with the artwork which are mostly valentines cards from Gray.

I love these curtains!  As with the others they were made by my Mum.

The tub chair is really old and from Ikea, my Mum covered the cushion for me.  The wardrobe is from Next

Mirrors are from Dwell, RIP :(

Hope you've been enjoying my little tour!

Wednesday Wants

Oh my gosh you guys, I have found the most gorgeous dress on asos this week.  Yes it is a bit pricey but boy is it beautiful.  I'm swooning over here!  White seems to be everywhere right now and this is one white dress you can get away with wearing to a wedding without worrying about offending the bride.  Dreamy.

Dress: asos

How amazing is the print on this Lashes of London dress?  I think this must be exclusive to Topshop as I can't find it on their website, they also do a two piece set which is well cute. I love how vibrant it is.

Monochrome is still drawing my eye and this Closet number is hot!  Polka dots are always a winner in my eyes so what could be better than two lots of polka dots on one dress?!  Perfect.

I want some yellow shoes!  Not sure why but I have been drawn to them.  Not sure I could pull off neon so think I am better off going for a warmer yellow like this pair, lovely.
Court Shoes: Noe @ Spartoo Shoes

Roller Derby

Well the weather was bloody miserable this weekend wasn't it?!  We did manage to do some gardening and I squeezed in one coat on the garden bench... it says to paint on a dry day, not much chance of that right now!  We still need to dig up the huge roots of some sort of bamboo plant... any tips?  I've blogged this dress before but as it was part of a fab giveaway I don't think it got the attention it deserves.  Such a cute print.  I've teamed it with my favourite colour at the moment, cobalt.  Definitely brightens a drab day.

Cardigan: H&M
Necklace: eBay

It was also pretty windy in our garden, kudos to those of you who always manage to take great outfit photos outside, it's not that easy!

Lets hope Monday is kind to us all.

Sunday Sweets #32 Lemon Meringue Pie

Last Sunday evening I had my Dad and sister over for Fathers Day.  We usually take my Dad out for a meal (he had his first Nando's and first Wagamama's due to Fathers Day celebrations!) but this year I wanted treat him to a home cooked curry and his favourite pudding.  My Dad loves lemon meringue pie and I always try to pile on as much fluffy meringue as physically possible!  I would love to say that this is made totally from scratch but hey lets face it no one has time to make pastry.  This is the one recipe where I actually prefer the way it comes out if you 'cheat'.  I buy a sweet pastry case and a pack of lemon pie filling (two servings for a total of 55p!!) to make the base and then whip up a batch of meringue.  Super cheap and speedy!

Ingredients
1 sweet pastry case
1 pack of lemon pie filling plus 1 egg yolk
4 egg whites
200g golden caster sugar

Method

Preheat the oven to 200c  /  fan 180  /  gas 6

Make up the lemon pie filling as directed on the packet then pour into the pastry case and set aside to cool

Whip the egg whites into soft peaks

Slowly add the sugar a spoonful at a time whilst continuously whisking until smooth and glossy

Put spoonfuls of the meringue around the outside of the pie spreading it so it just touches the pastry.  This anchors the meringue to the base and stops it from sliding off

Pile the rest in the centre and smooth

Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until it starts to crisp and change colour

You're meant to leave it to cool but I love it whilst it is still hot so it's up to you!

My Dad loved it!

Like Bugs

I am such a lucky girl, not only did the lovely people at the Sunglasses Shop send me a pair of Raybans to review they also sent me a pair of Chanel sunnies.  How amazing is that?!  And aren't they beautiful?!

I am not really interested in designer clothes or bags but I do love a pair of designer sunglasses with Chanel being at the top of my wishlist.  I wear sunglasses most days for driving so they don't seem extravagant like an expensive dress and if you pick the right frames they don't date either.  My first pair of Chanel sunglasses are now approaching 5 years old  and are still going strong.  I am glad these ones come with a black case though, my old ones came with a white case that unfortunately didn't stay white for very long.

Thanks again Sunglasses Shop, you've made me a very happy Sarah!

Watermelon Delight

Even though it is rather gloomy today I am so glad it is Friday.  I know I say this almost every week but I didn't think it was ever going to come round.  A few more hours of work to get through then time for some fun and lie ins!

I loved the print of this Sugarhill Boutique dress the moment I saw it in their lookbook but wasn't sure the shape would be right on me so held off.  I then saw this exclusive to Oliver Bonas version and knew it had to be mine!  It's just so cheery and can brighten even the dullest of days like today.   Would be fab if someone could whisk me off on a sunny holiday I can lounge around in it drinking watermelon cocktails... I wish!

Cardigan: Peacocks (v. old)

I am hoping this rain does one and we have a glorious day tomorrow, I have a garden to work on and will not be doing it in the rain!!  Have a lovely weekend you guys.

Through The New Home Keyhole - Hall

I hope you've been enjoying the weekly visits to our new home.  I should bake some cakes and put the kettle on ready for your next visit!  We wanted to make an impact with our hallway.  It's the first thing anyone sees when they come for a visit so we wanted it to be bold, bright and welcoming.  I think we have managed to achieve all three!  We had the orange paint in the hall of the flat and the same grey flooring and loved them so decided to bring them over to our new home.  I am over the moon how it has turned out, I was a bit worried that it might be too much orange but the cool grey balances it perfectly.  I was thinking about a bit of fancy wallpaper or maybe a carpet runner in the future, best learn to hang wallpaper first!

We have now almost finished the last room, Gray's office.  Or little boys games room to be more apt ;)  It does double up as a guest room if we have enough guests over to stay as it also houses our sofas bed.  It is defo the opposite to my girlie kitchen, not light and breezy more dark and cosy.  I will take some snaps once it's finished.  After that we have some work to do on the garden (nothing major this year mind!), the loft to board so we can move our storage from the garage and then Gray wants to convert the garage to a home gym... guess I won't have any excuses not to work out then!   Do any of you work out at home?  If so what equipment do you use/would you recommend.  I am thinking a treadmill might be the best option.

Before and after:

The door curtain and dart coat hooks have are all from the hallway in the flat.  I love the door curtain, helps keep the warmth in during the winter and being orange velvet looks ace!

Make sure you never forget!

I am so proud of our little hall console table!  I hunted high and low for something suitable to no avail.  I then saw the table legs in Ikea so bought them along with a high gloss shelf and got Gray to screw them together.  Apart from being peanuts to make the best thing about it is the shelf didn't need attaching to the wall to stand up, ace!

Gray made this papercut after me telling him my Dad used to sing me asleep with this song as a child <3 p="">

This typographic map of the UK by Bold and Noble took pride of place on our orange wall in the flat so it only seemed right it got a good spot in the new house.

I cannot tell you how much I love this grey cabinet* from Out There Interiors.  When Jenny got in touch and asked if I would like to receive an item to review I had a really hard job deciding what would fit best.  The have an amazing range of mirrored furniture and I almost went for an S lamp before deciding on this beautiful grey cabinet.  It is perfect for the space and I am sure you will agree looks amazing.

Any gardening tips are gratefully received, neither of us have a clue what we are doing!  First task is to sort the lawn out as it's full of weeds and make sure we don't kill the clementius... hopefully it's pretty hardy!

Wednesday Wants

I cannot tell you how tired I am today :(  I have managed to get a cold in June and had to go to Glasgow for work which was not much fun - I was in bed in my hotel room by 8.30pm as I felt so rough! Not the one.  I did manage to get the Chanel powder compact I tried to get in my local House of Fraser in duty free though so every cloud and all that.  Spending time online shopping/browsing has cheered me right up.  My picks this week are...

I do love a good paisley print and this one is cute!  It kinda has sleeves if you count ones with great big holes as sleeves, thankfully the little ties minimise the gape so I will let asos off.  Pretty, pretty.

 Dress: asos

Don't think I will be lucky enough to attend any festivals this week so I might just get this Missguided number, stick a tent in my garden and pretend.  Tie dye is always a winner and if it rains I can just go catch the actual festival highlights on the tv in the warmth with a nice cold beer.

Dress: Missguided

I love, love, love this dress! Not sure I could pull the colour off but that isn't stopping me opening the window and having a little look at it on a regular basis.  I do realise how sad that sounds ;)  It swooshes as she walks down the catwalk!  The bow on the back and the shape of the skirt kinda remind me of my wedding dress.  It's by Ted Baker though and they are a terrible fit on me so I guess it will never be mine, sob!

Dress: asos

Just to show how much I love the above dress I even picked these shoes out as what I would team them with should it ever be mine... haha.

What are you lusting after this week?

Strawberry Sundae

I'm kinda happy that it's mid June and I can still get away with wearing black tights.  Not happy about the rain though, warm enough for no coat minus the rain please mister weather man!  This is another of my Lucy dresses by Emily and Fin.  I love gingham and the chunkiness of the check is really pleasing.  No hint of school girl summer dresses more picnic blanket!  Rediscovering the Lucy dress is kinda like bumping in to an old friend, I didn't realise til I wore one again just how much I missed them.  I just wish they were easier to get hold of, Modcloth seems to have the best stock which is crazy seeing as Emily and Fin are a UK brand.

I've taken the plunge and snapped my first lot of outfit photos in my garden.  I say I snapped, Gray actually helped out and took them for me.  My regular tripod and chair set up doesn't really cut it outside, can anyone recommend a cheap but tall tripod?  Thankfully these were relatively painless, Gray usually moans a lot whenever I ask him to snap outfit photos for me :(

Cardigan: H&M

I'm off to Glasgow for work today, will be back late on Tuesday so will catch up with you all in time for my weekly wishlist.

Sunday Sweets #31 Blueberry Muffins

I do love a good blueberry muffin.  Second choice would be raspberry (they had sold out of raspberries in Sainsburys though so they weren't even an option come baking!) I did once enjoy a very scrummy ginger muffin but they are few and far between.  Forget chocolate or anything with dried fruit in, they just don't work for me.  The best bit about this recipe is you can make whatever flavour takes your fancy and the base of the recipe stays the same.  I like to tell myself that muffins are not a cake and therefore are totally acceptable breakfast food...

Ingredients
250g self raising flour
145g caster sugar
1tsp bicarbonate of soda
85g melted butter
2 large eggs
200ml milk

Method

Preheat the oven to 200c  /  fan 180  /  gas 6

Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and the wet together in a jug

Pour the wet in to the dry and combine

Add your choice of flavouring, I used 200g blueberries

Pour the mixture in to muffin case.  I added a big spoon of mix, then a teaspoon of blueberry jam in the centre followed by another big spoon of mix

Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden and a skewer comes out clean

Turn out onto a cooling rack to cool.

I couldn't wait for them too cool, they are yummy fresh out of the oven too.  Just be careful not to burn your lip on that jam!
